Custom handmade Fairy Garden Houses, Outdoor Fairy Houses, and Fairy Doors.
Custom handmade Fairy Garden Houses, Outdoor Fairy Houses, and Fairy Doors.
My team at Delightfully Evil Designs is taking custom commission projects that we can install in your backyard, business, or park.
A project near and dear to my heart! A lovely family located in Bedford NY, approached me to help them recreate the magic they experienced on a trail in Scotland that featured fairy doors throughout the forest. To do this, my team and I created and installed 13 Fairy doors on trees along their private trail. Each Fairy Door measured from 5 to 11 inches tall, and they each rested on a tiny landing. They were sculpted and painted to blend in with the forest and to mimic natural materials. These doors were to be visible, but not obvious, creating magical delight when discovered while walking the dog or just out for a stroll. These doors are permanent; they don't need to be taken down, and they will last longer than most trees!
There is one Fairy door that is easy to spot, the one facing the driveway, so that this family can be greeted by the guardian Fae each time they come home, and know their house is magically protected each time they leave.
Why add landings to each door? So that the Fae could take a short rest before entering their Fairy Realm, of course. They need to rest their wings before opening a door to another dimension, as you can imagine. I like to think they would use passwords and other means to keep curious humans out of their houses. These landings can also act as an altar for offering shiny treasures and sweet treats. Need a small favor? Lose something important and need help finding it? Leave an offering on a Fairy Door landing, and see what happens. I am tempted to put some bird seed on the door landings in my yard to see if I can capture some nice wildlife photos.
These doors, landings, and windows were made from a Cement clay called Pal Tiya, which is engineered as an artist medium for outdoor sculpture. It is strong, durable and lightweight, and it maintains each carved detail well. To do this, each sculpted piece takes 4 weeks to cure, so the process is a little longer than I am accustomed to; however, so worth the extra wait! This medium soaks in paint and allows for a natural wood-like texture to show through. I so enjoyed playing with this medium and experimenting on my own trees at home. My team of engineers and artists (my husband and I) learned a lot from this project, and I hope to do more just like it.
